Hugh Laurie says ‘dad would have hated’ ‘fake version’ of doctor

Despite earning $700,000 per episode on House, Hugh Laurie admitted he feels like a “fraud” for not becoming a real doctor, as his father, Dr. William Laurie, had hoped. Laurie, originally planning to study medicine, shifted his focus to acting after discovering a drama club at university. His acting career took off, with notable roles in Blackadder, Sense and Sensibility, and House, where he played the brilliant but troubled Dr. Gregory House.

Though Laurie achieved global fame, he still feels guilty for not following his father’s path, calling himself a “cop out” for choosing acting instead of medicine. He admits that he still has “doctor fantasies” and feels his father would have disapproved of his shortcut to success.
