Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei dies days after being ‘set on fire by boyfriend’
Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away at 33, days after being attacked by her ex-boyfriend. On September 1, following her return from church in Trans Nzoia County, she was allegedly doused in petrol and set on fire.
The Ugandan Athletics Federation announced her hospitalization for severe burns covering 75% of her body. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. In their statement, the federation condemned the violence and called for justice. Cheptegei’s family has also sought justice for their daughter. An investigation into her death is ongoing.
