Canada’s next Prime Minister Mark Carney vows to win trade war as he immediately hits out at Donald Trump

Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has been elected as Canada’s new Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau.

He takes office amid a trade war with the U.S. triggered by Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods.

Trump suggested Canada could avoid the tariffs by becoming the 51st state, accusing the country of failing to curb drug imports. In response, Carney strongly rejected this idea, declaring that Canada would never join the U.S. and emphasizing the importance of unity in the face of challenges.

Carney won the Liberal Party leadership with 85.9% of the vote, defeating Chrystia Freeland.
