He was hurt badly and had many injuries, such as broken bones, heart damage, and brain trauma.
He had been put on life support and was not awake.

Following Her Gut Feeling
There was a “90% chance” that Danielle’s husband would never wake up from the sleep, so the doctors told her to turn off the life support.
He had broken bones in his femur, jaw, ribs, collar bone, and skull. His liver was also badly damaged, and he had a major brain injury.
He only had a 10% chance of waking up and a 5% chance of getting better.
Danielle said in a TV interview that the doctors had told her that if it were them, they would cut the cord.
“They said that’s what they’d want their family to do.” She said, even though she refused to take their advice. “I knew that God could get us through that. I didn’t think that it was too big for God,” she added.
Matt and Daniella had only been seeing each other for two months before they got married. Matt was 23 and she was 24.
The accident happened seven months after the first one.
Matt’s father had died in a terrible accident two years before that. Because of this, his mother got too sick to care for him when he was left in that state after his accident.
Daniella made the choice to keep him on life support. Because of the damage to his brain, Matt had no memory of Daniella when he woke up.
He was happy that he had married her anyway. He told ABC news, “I’m sure glad I married her.”

He was happy that he had married her anyway. He told ABC news, “I’m sure glad I married her.”
Until the end of time
Danielle and Matt moved back in with her mother and took care of him together.
He was still in a coma for the first three months. He began following them with his eyes as soon as he woke up.
Daniella said, “If we’ve got to bring him home, let’s make sure he has the best view in the world.” She remembered telling her mom that he should have a room with a view. “If he’s going to be a body in a bed, let’s give him something to look at.”
Matt proved that he could hear and understand what was being said.
They worked together to get Matt to do the easy things that his therapist had him do in rehab, like holding up something and telling him to reach out and take it.
The day he reached out and grabbed a toy motorbike is still fresh in her mind. “It doesn’t sound like much but to us, it was a miracle.”
Almost three years after the accident, he took his first steps.
Things started to get better for him physically, but it took longer for his brain to heal from the stress.
He has had a hard time getting his long-term memory back, and he can’t remember Danielle from before the crash.
As soon as he woke up, he had no idea who she was. They had to start over with getting to know each other.
It takes a long time and costs a lot to rehab. Danielle set up a GoFundMe to help pay for it, but it’s no longer live. She wrote, “It’s been 3 1/2 years since Matt’s accident and he continues to improve! He is not on any medications, he walks with forearm crutches for minimal distance and supervision. Insurance will no longer pay for therapy. People with Traumatic Brain Injury need a lot of rehab, people continue to make improvements even 10 years after their injury. Insurance doesn’t pay for the amount of therapy they need so often times that person doesn’t reach their full potential.”
Matt had to work on getting his sense of fun back. But there was a time when Daniella realized her husband was still the same weirdo.
He asked for a spicy chicken wrap from Cheddars, which is his favorite food. “He whispered but I know I heard him right, Cheddars was his all-time favorite before the accident!”
