Braless TV news anchors spark heated debate
Albanian TV station Zjarr has stirred controversy by featuring braless news anchors, igniting debates about boldness versus objectification. In 2016, the station gained attention for its provocative format, with presenters wearing open jackets while delivering news, a move that the owner, Ismet Drishti, claimed was meant to symbolize transparency and attract viewers in a country with a history of censorship.
Despite the backlash, the approach was successful, turning presenters like Enki Bracaj into stars. Enki, who auditioned in an open blouse, stated she wanted to stand out in a competitive industry. However, her career ended abruptly after she accepted a modeling job with Playboy, leading to her dismissal from Zjarr.
Greta Hoxhaj, her successor, also embraced a revealing style, claiming it was simply for television. The program has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising its boldness while others criticize it as sexist. While images of the anchors have gone viral, feminist groups in Albania have largely remained silent on the issue, with some arguing that viewers can choose to change the channel.
