Gang finds unusually spiky creatures in nest – takes a closer look and jaws drop when they realize what kind of animals they are
Hope is rising for a species on the brink of extinction. Researchers at Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary in Australia recently discovered a litter of newborn western quolls, also known as chuditchs. This species has dramatically declined since European settlement, now found only in small clusters in southwestern Australia.
The ecologists have been working to reintroduce these marsupials to the sanctuary, where they had previously gone extinct. The birth of these baby quolls indicates that the species is thriving and successfully reproducing in their new environment.
Georgina Anderson, a senior field ecologist, noted that regular monitoring shows the quolls are adjusting well, with one named Aang often seen at camera traps. This discovery brings joy and hope for the future of the western quoll, suggesting they may soon thrive throughout Australia again.
