Parents want home economics to be taught in schools again to teach kids basic life skills
In today’s society, our dependence on technology has grown significantly, with gadgets like Instant Pots, air fryers, and smartphones becoming integral to daily life. Many young people today may lack essential skills like cooking and laundry that past generations mastered at a younger age.
There’s a growing call among parents to reintroduce home economics in schools, focusing on practical skills beyond just cooking. These courses could teach financial management, nutrition, sewing, and gardening—essential life skills that many students miss out on.
Despite increasing college enrollment, many young adults may not possess basic skills for independent living, such as cooking nutritious meals or maintaining a clean space. A dedicated home economics course could help students learn these vital skills in a supportive environment, relieving some pressure from parents.
